Water quality poor in estuaries despite no discharges from Lake Okeechobee, expert says
D–minus.
That’s the overall water quality score right now in Florida Oceanographic Society's Weekly Water Quality Report on the St. Lucie Estuary and the Southern Indian River Lagoon ecosystem.
Although the poor ratings say the water in the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon is dirty, there haven’t been eastbound discharges from Lake Okeechobee in months.
The culprit, according to Florida Oceanographic Society's Executive Director and CEO Mark Perry, is not the lake; it lies around the canals that would connect the lake to the estuaries, when opened - mainly the C-44 Canal.
