If you own or have access to a dock along the Indian River Lagoon or St. Lucie River, you can play a direct role in restoring the ecosystem in your own backyard. The Florida Oceanographic Society, a Stuart- based research nonprofit, needs volunteers to offer dock space for its new Living Docks and Oyster Gardening program. The sweeping restoration initiative expected to launch this summer will use existing docks to host dried oyster shells that attract natural filter-feeders, create a more diverse ecosystem and improve water quality.
