Meet Sue Mamalis
Sue Mamalis was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. At 18, she left for Spain and then Beirut, Lebanon. She made her way back to the United States and has lived in many different cities. Three years ago, she moved from Jupiter to Stuart and has now settled in Jensen Beach.
After recently retiring from a long career in banking, Sue wanted to get involved in volunteer work. A neighbor introduced her to Florida Oceanographic Society and its numerous volunteer opportunities. Excited to engage with her community, she began her volunteer journey in 2022 and has already accumulated over 125 hours.
Sue has worn many hats in her volunteer roles. She worked with the Living Docks program, participated in oyster shell bagging, drilling, and matting, and continues to help with seagrass matting and maintaining the seagrass nursery. "I truly enjoy all of my current duties as a volunteer and look forward to more opportunities in the future," she says. She values the camaraderie of volunteering in different areas of the Coastal Center.
Sue's versatility extends to her career as well. She began in public relations in the Bahamas, then became an Executive Assistant after a move. Another move led her to obtain a real estate license, and eventually, she embarked on a 35-year banking career, retiring in 2021.
One of her favorite things to do is spend time with her son, daughter-in-law, and two amazing grandchildren, who live close enough for frequent visits. She plays tennis 4-5 times a week and enjoys walking 4-5 miles several times a week. The beach is her happy place, and she goes there as often as she can. She loves swimming in the ocean, boating, and is an avid reader.
