Meet Nell Brewer
The sunshine state has held a special place in Nell Brewer’s heart since she was a kid spending family vacations here. “I love nature and enjoy being around animals,” says Nell. The tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and biodiversity of Florida’s ecosystems brought Nell back for good in 2010.
Nell has been a part of the Florida Oceanographic Society’s volunteer team since 2021, accumulating over 200 hours. Working as an Exhibit Guide, she teaches guests about the invertebrates in the touch tank, and answers questions in the Ocean EcoCenter. “I meet so many interesting people, and I always have a great time.”
In conversations with guests, she is continuously motivated by their enthusiasm and impressed by how much they know and care about the natural world. “It’s great to share fun-facts about the animals and the coastal habitats and have meaningful conversations with guests of all ages.” In fact, it was a visit to the Coastal Center with her son, then a toddler, when Nell realized she wanted to volunteer for the Florida Oceanographic Society. Since then, she and her son have also participated in seagrass matting and oyster matting events together.
Nell studied abroad in Costa Rica while at the University of Massachusetts, learning about environmental perspectives, sustainability, and ecotourism. She turned her passion for the environment into a teaching career, and currently educates high school students on subjects including biology, marine science, and environmental science.
Nell enjoys kayaking, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and reading. One of her favorite things to do is explore the Florida springs, especially Silver Springs and Juniper Springs.
