Meet Lois and John Timpanaro

Lois and John Timpanaro lived on Long Island for 37 years. Having lived near the water up north for so long, they knew they wanted to be near the water when vacationing in the winter. Local relatives brought them to the Treasure Coast, and after a few years renting, they purchased a condo on Hutchinson Island.

“We have always been a fishing and boating family,” Lois says. “We are very much aware of protecting our waterways and surrounding areas.” After learning about the impact Florida Oceanographic Society has on the Hutchinson Island community, they wanted to get involved and learn about the area they live in.

For a time, John was involved with the Florida Oceanographic Oyster Restoration program, or FLOOR, participating in baggings and deployments. Currently, he helps clean the seagrass tanks. “I like knowing that what I do helps keep the water clean,” he says. Lois, in her own right, is a member of the Green Team and participates in pruning, transplanting and removing invasive weeds that could otherwise choke out the beautiful garden. “I enjoy learning about the native plants that grow here in Florida.” Between the two of them they have accumulated over 400 volunteer hours since joining Florida Oceanographic in 2017.

John retired after working for Verizon for 30 years as a Technical Training Supervisor. After the children started school, Lois spent 17 years working as an office manager for a local family-owned business. They have three boys who are all married, with the first two boys being twins! Military science runs in the family with one son currently stationed in Marble Head, Ohio, in the United States Coast Guard, and another son a veteran from the United States Marines. They have three grandchildren.
