About the Event
Celebrate our estuaries at the Coastal Center on Saturday, September 30th. Estuaries are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on our planet, teeming with life and essential to our coastal habitats. Learn more about these important ecosystems with educator-led trail walks, oyster and water quality demonstrations, crafts, activities and more!
All event activities are included in admission price to the Coastal Center on September 30th.
Schedule of Day's Events:
Guided Trail Walks - 10:15 am & 12:00 pm
Discover the fascinating world of mangrove forests and their connections to our estuaries with a guided nature walk to the Indian River Lagoon.
Oyster Restoration & Water Quality Demonstrations - 11:00 am & 12:45 pm
Journey out to the Indian River Lagoon shoreline for a closer look at our oyster restoration efforts. Learn about the importance of water quality in our estuary habitats. Guided trail walks will finish at this location.
Visual History of the Indian River Lagoon - 11:15 am
Get an in-depth look at the problems facing our estuaries and the advocacy efforts to save our waters with this special presentation by Executive Director & CEO Mark Perry.
Seagrass Nursery Tour - 12:15 pm
Learn about local seagrass species and the process of restoring our fragile coastal habitats.
Ethical Angling Demonstration - 12:30 pm
Test your knowledge of fish species and ethical catch and release techniques.
Documentary Screening: Emerald Sanctuary - 1:00 pm
Join us for a screening of the short documentary Emerald Sanctuary as it dives in to the importance of seagrass. The screening will be followed by a tour of our Seagrass Nursery to learn more about the importance of seagrass in our coastal ecosystems.
Booths & Activities - 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Participate in a scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes, get creative at our kid’s craft area and stop by our exhibitor booths to learn about their work in our estuaries! Guest organizations include Audubon of Martin County, IFAS/Sea Grant, Florida Native Plant Society, FWC, One Lagoon and River Kidz.
Food Vendors - 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Cool off with some tasty treats from Ital Bowls and Kona Ice!
