Meet Volunteer Starr Robeson

“Florida Oceanographic Society was always on my short-list of places to volunteer when I retired,” says Starr Robeson. “I’m glad to be part of the Green Team, and I love oyster shell bagging.”  Starr has been part of the volunteer family for about two years, and she’s given more than 250 hours of service.

Now that Starr is retired from her 45-year career in nursing, she has more time for DIY projects around the house and working outside in her yard. As a Green Team member, she likes helping to keep the Butterfly Garden looking good. Lately the Team has been working around the Group Pavilion and getting the old trailhead  near the Ocean EcoCenter ready for use again soon. Starr also gets involved in cleaning the seagrass nursery tanks, and the beach cleanups.

Since the pandemic started, Starr has renewed her interest in cooking. Her taste runs to healthy cooking and baking practices, and plant-based recipes. Regular trips to Shadowood Farm in Palm City keep her well-stocked in organic produce. She also likes to walk each day, especially through Indian Riverside Park.  And now that the Barn Theatre and StarStruck Performing Arts Center have reopened, she’s getting back to the plays and musicals she enjoys.

Starr’s daughter and granddaughter live close by, and the trio is hoping to take a trip together next summer. One of her favorite trips was an Alaskan cruise that started in Vancouver and traveled to Juneau, Sitka and several glaciers. “Alaska has been my favorite trip so far, but I’ve also been to Hawaii, and I love the Carolinas and Georgia during the fall season,” says Starr. “I’m always eager to explore new places.”
