Meet Thomas Buhr

Thomas Buhr, originally from Michigan, made the move to Florida in 1972, residing here until 1994 before returning to his home state. Since 2012, he’s adopted the lifestyle of a "snowbird," splitting his time between Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forest and Stuart, Florida. Drawn to Stuart in the 1970s for its pristine natural surroundings and strong conservation ethos, Thomas was particularly impressed by Martin County's leadership in environmental preservation.

His passion for clean water led him to Florida Oceanographic Society after a friend's recommendation in 2017. Enthralled by the diverse volunteer opportunities available, Thomas quickly immersed himself in the organization's activities, amassing over 150 volunteer hours. When asked about his favorite aspect of volunteering, Thomas highlights the camaraderie among the people involved and finding solace in their positivity amidst the challenges of modern Florida.

When asked his favorite part of being a volunteer at Florida Oceanographic, he said, “the people”. He sometimes feels, “Florida has become a very negative place, but the folks at Florida Oceanographic, staff and volunteers, are the best of us. They give me hope.” Thomas mostly enjoys the physical opportunities which include oyster table raking, oyster bagging and deployment, seagrass matting and other seagrass programs…amidst all that, he also participates in Adopt-a-Highway and Beach Cleanups…all with a smile. His most recent endeavor was helping clear algae in the Gamefish Lagoon.

With a rich academic background including a BA in History from the University of Miami, a Master's degree in Communication from the University of Central Florida, and a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Michigan, Thomas has dedicated 20 years to academic teaching and research, alongside 30 years of freelance writing on topics ranging from fishing to conservation and substance abuse issues. He's also authored two books, The Outgoing (a novel) and The Big Water (a history book), with two more books slated for release in 2025. Despite his busy schedule, Thomas prioritizes activities like fishing, mountain biking, reading, writing, and caring for natural habitats.
