Meet Alice Leliukas
Alice's journey to Florida began in 1987 when she relocated from Georgia to join The Women’s Center of Martin County. With a background in nursing, she later trained as a Certified Nurse Midwife, practicing in Georgia, Florida, and even Tamuning, Guam. After spending 20 years working at a birth center in Guam, she retired in 2018 and returned to Florida, drawn by her lifelong love for water and conservation.
Her passion for protecting marine environments led her to start volunteering with the Florida Oceanographic Society in 2020, where she's since dedicated over 250 hours. Alice has taken on a variety of roles—from supporting the seagrass program and water testing on the North Fork to oyster bagging and deployment. Recently, she has been helping out administratively in the office. Alice has been diving into Florida Oceanographic's history through her work on a special archiving project and has been learning about the far-reaching impacts of the organization on marine conservation.
When she is not volunteering, Alice makes time for the beach and family. Though her daughter and son-in-law recently moved to Virginia Beach, she still finds plenty of time to visit her grandson and his family in Lecanto. Her free time is spent exploring National Parks, traveling internationally, and, occasionally, taking on new adventures. She may surprise you—Alice celebrated her 60th birthday with a thrilling skydive and has since discovered a passion for scuba diving, logging over 1,300 dives across five countries, mainly around Micronesia. Favorite dive sites are Palau and Yap. And some of her favorite animals include clown triggerfish, octopus and manta rays.
Alice’s spirit for exploration and conservation keeps her connected to the marine world and the community she serves through Florida Oceanographic Society, inspiring others along the way.
