The Dynamic Duo - Mary “Ty” Forbush and Florence McGurk
When it comes to protecting Florida’s waterways, Mary “Ty” Forbush and Florence McGurk are an unstoppable team. From weekly water testing to innovative conservation initiatives, these dedicated volunteers are making waves for the environment.
For Ty, living near the Intracoastal in Jupiter and now along the South Fork of the St. Lucie River has deepened her commitment to maintaining water quality. Her journey with Florida Oceanographic Society began in 2018 when a neighbor invited her to join the water testing program at Sandhill Cove. After her original partner retired, Florence stepped in to form this dynamic duo in 2022.
Florence and her husband, Linc, have long supported conservation causes. When the water brought them to Stuart in 2001, she was thrilled to contribute by joining Ty in the weekly water testing program. Together, they test for pH, salinity, clarity, and dissolved oxygen, sending their findings to Florida Oceanographic. They’ve also spearheaded efforts to turn their dock into a “Living Dock” by installing oyster mats to enhance water quality.
Ty’s dedication to volunteer work runs deep. She has donated over 500 hours to Florida Oceanographic and has been involved in everything from oyster matting to seagrass restoration. With a BA in Music, Ty has taught Suzuki Piano, worked in event programming for Hershey Theatre, and even served as a professional travel agent. Her lifelong love of learning led her to guide tours at the Jupiter Lighthouse for 25 years and volunteer at Jupiter Hospital.
Florence, a retired research chemist, brings a scientific background to her conservation efforts. Originally from Hamadan, Iran, she holds a BA in Chemistry and previously worked on acid rain research at the University of Illinois. After retiring early, Florence and Linc pursued their love of sailing before settling in Stuart. Since joining Florida Oceanographic, Florence has accumulated over 200 volunteer hours and continues to bring enthusiasm and dedication to her role.
When they’re not volunteering, Ty and Florence enjoy a range of hobbies. Ty treasures time with her two children and three grandsons, as well as gardening, traveling, and attending concerts and lectures. Florence, who describes herself and her husband as retired adventurers, enjoys reading, long walks, and staying active.
Together, Ty and Florence embody the spirit of environmental stewardship, showing how teamwork and dedication can make a lasting impact on Florida’s coastal ecosystems. Thank you, Ty and Florence, for your incredible contributions to Florida Oceanographic!
