Meet Merit Wallace

In recent years, amidst the chaos of being a nurse practitioner, Merit Wallace found solace in the outdoors, a sanctuary amidst the pandemic. Realizing the importance of habitat preservation, she sought ways to give back. Discovering the Water Quality Testing program at Florida Oceanographic Society, Merit eagerly embarked on her volunteer journey in 2021, accumulating over 150 hours since.

"I enjoy connecting with the locals, (both wild, human, and wild humans) who frequent the park and waterways," says Merit, relishing the opportunity to work outdoors. She values the sense of community and appreciation for volunteers fostered by Florida Oceanographic Society.

A nurse practitioner by profession, Merit's career began in the US Army in 2009, where she served in Germany and North Carolina. Later, she worked at All About Kids Pediatrics in Palm City before joining Included Health, a telehealth urgent care service. Born and raised on the Treasure Coast, Merit returned to her roots in 2015, drawn by its unique charm. Married to her high school sweetheart, Keith, they share their home with four furry companions.

Outside of work, Merit indulges in her passion for birding and backpacking. She serves as a board member for Audubon of Martin County and relishes outdoor adventures with her husband, whether it's watching Orlando Magic basketball games or exploring the waters on their flats boat. Reflecting on her favorite hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Merit recalls the awe-inspiring experience of being amidst the ancient rock layers, a memory embellished by a chance encounter with renowned climber Alex Honnold along the trail.
